Weird story links World Emoji Day to Apple World Emoji Day happens on July 17 every year -- but why? The holiday's story takes a circuitous path through Apple history.

It’s World Emoji Day – which are your favourites? I’m sufficiently old and grumpy to have resisted the use of emoji for a long time, wondering what was wrong with, you know, words – but I did find myself assimilated in the end.

iPhone 17 Pro may actually get that scratch-resistant, anti-reflective display Macworld
With a little less than two months to go until Apple unveils its late-2025 phones, an intriguing new feature which had looked increasingly unlikely to appear has suddenly roared back into contention. The iPhone 17 Pro is reportedly going to get an anti-reflective screen after all.
The technology, designed to make phone displays more resistant to scratches as well as cutting back on reflected glare, was first touted as a possible upgrade for the iPhone 17 as long ago as March 2024, six months before the launch of the iPhone 16. As interesting long-term rumors often do, this seemed to get less plausible the closer we got to the launch, and in April of this year we covered a report that it had been scrapped because of “problems scaling up the display coating process.”
But hold your horses, because MacRumors now says it’s back on. Basing its coverage on an unnamed “reliable source,” the site claims that Apple suppliers “have been able to achieve a high enough yield on the anti-reflective glass to support mass production” and that the new screen will feature on the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro. The two non-Pro handsets will not get the upgrade, which could help Apple upsell its more expensive models.
It’s believed that the new screen coating may be the same Gorilla Armor that Corning made for Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Ultra, which came out in January 2024. (In their review of that phone, our colleagues on Tech Advisor said they “had no problem using the phone outdoors, even on a bright sunny day.”) It certainly sounds similar, and Apple has a long-standing relationship with Corning. So when we say it’s a new feature, the reality may be that it’s only new to the iPhone, and will have been on the market for the best part of two years when it makes its debut on the iPhone 17 Pro.
To keep up with all the latest news and rumors concerning this fall’s releases, bookmark our regularly updated iPhone 17 superguide. And if you’d rather buy now than wait for the new handsets, peruse our roundup of the best iPhone deals for the lowest prices on the current range.

MacBook Air vs Pro compared: Which Mac laptop is right for you? Macworld
Verdict:
The MacBook Air is a more affordable option, suitable for everyday tasks, while the MacBook Pro offers superior performance and features, making it ideal for more demanding users.
Apple’s most popular Mac laptop is the MacBook Air, which offers a great combination of features for the typical user, but there is another MacBook to consider is you are looking for the best MacBook – the more powerful MacBook Pro. In this feature we aim to help those who want to buy an Apple laptop, but aren’t sure what the difference between the MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro is and whether the cheaper Air can be as good as the Pro.
We’ll explain the advantages and disadvantages of buying a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro, we’ll discuss what makes the MacBook Air so popular, and we’ll talk about which uses each Mac laptop is best suited to.
We’ll also look in depth at the various specs and features of the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro so you can see how the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro compare in terms of price, display, design, processor, graphics, storage, RAM and more.
What’s the difference between MacBook Air and Pro?
On one side we have the MacBook Air, a slim, stylish Mac laptop that is, according to Apple, the most popular laptop in the world. It offers excellent battery life and more than enough power for daily tasks at an affordable price.
On the other side, the MacBook Pro offers three levels of power to meet the needs of even the most demanding user, more RAM, more storage, longer battery life and a significantly superior display. Those extra features aren’t cheap though.
There is so much mode to differentiate the different Apple laptop models as you will see if you read on.
MacBook Air vs MacBook Pro: Compared
The Mac laptops that have our attention are the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air and the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro. The differences between the MacBook Air models and the entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro models are less pronounced than those between those, more consumer focused models, and the MacBook Pro models with the Pro and Mac processor variants, as you will see if you read on. The MacBook Air will more than meet the needs of the majority, with the added bonus that it’s lighter than the MacBook Pro. This is also the Mac cheapest Mac laptop you can buy, and you may be able to get it for even less than Apple sells it for – take a look at our round up of the Best MacBook Air deals.
What you need to know about the MacBook Air, 13-inch
The 13-inch M4 MacBook Air was last updated in March 2025. It is the cheapest MacBook Air you can buy, starting at $999/£999. For that you get an M4 chip with 10-core CPU, 8-core GPU, 16GB memory, and a 256GB SSD.

For $1,399/£1,399 you can get more unified memory (Apple’s name for RAM): 24GB instead of 16GB, but you will probably be ok with 16GB RAM. Those are the standard configurations. There are more build-to-order options available that include 32GB unified memory, and 1TB or 2TB SSD.

Who is the 15-inch MacBook Air for?
If you want a bigger display and budget doesn’t run to the MacBook Pro, the MacBook Air with 15-inch display will be sufficient. The specs are comparable, even battery life is the same. You are essentially paying $200 for the bigger screen and a six speaker sound system (compared to the four speakers in the 13-inch). If you need more power though, you might be better off looking for an discount on an older MacBook Pro model.
What you need to know about the MacBook Air, 15-inch
If you want a larger screen for your Mac laptop then the cheapest option is the 15-inch MacBook Air. This Mac shares many of the specs of the 13-inch model, but offers a 15-inch display.
The cheapest 15-inch MacBook Air you can buy was last updated in March 2025 and starts at $1,199/£1,199. For that you get an M4 chip with 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 16GB memory, and a 256GB SSD. Those are the standard configurations. There are more build-to-order options available that include 32GB unified memory, and 1TB or 2TB SSD.

Who is the 14-inch MacBook Pro for?
This is a Mac to choose if you need a little more oomph than the MacBook Air can give, but don’t have the money for a MacBook Pro with M4 Pro chip. For those with slightly above average requirements, the M4 MacBook Pro is better suited to processor intensive operations than the MacBook Air and should be sufficient. The other major reasons to choose the MacBook Pro are it’s significantly better screen, better battery life, and additional ports.
If you need a bit more power and have the budget for the M4 Pro or M4 Max models the 14-inch MacBook Pro offers better value for money than it’s bigger screened sibling.
What you need to know about the MacBook Pro, 14-inch
The M4 MacBook Pro arrived in October 2024. The MacBook Air that arrived in March 2025 has the same processor, so you might be forgiven for thinking that the two laptops are identical, but they aren’t. The most obvious indication that the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro are different beasts is the price: The 14-inch MacBook Pro starts at $1,599/£1,599. That’s $400/£400 more than the entry-level MacBook Air.
Those two Macs aren’t really comparable though. The MacBook Pro M4 has an 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 16GB memory, and a 512GB SSD, so it’s actually more like the 13-inch MacBook Air with 512GB SSD for $1,199/£1,199 or the equivalent 15-inch MacBook Air with 512GB SSD for $1,399/£1,399.
What are you getting for the extra money if you choose a MacBook Pro? We’ll discuss this in a lot more detail below, but, essentially, you get a Mac with a better display, better heat management, better battery life, better audio and more ports. All of those features may be well worth the extra expense when compared to the MacBook Air.
There is also a lot more choice when it comes to the components of the MacBook Pro. The M4 models can support up to 2TB SSD and 32GB RAM, like the MacBook Air, but there are also more powerful M4 Pro and M4 Max models, with the M4 Pro supporting up to 48GB RAM and the M4 Max supporting up to 128GB RAM.
The M4 Pro can support up to 14-core CPU and 20-core GPU, while the M4 Mac can support up to 40-core GPU. Those models come with an exceptionally high price though, starting at $1,999/£1,999 for the M4 Pro and $3,199/£3,199 for the M4 Max. More on the specs below.

Who is the 16-inch MacBook Pro for?
The 16-inch MacBook Pro is the ultimate Mac, but it doesn’t offer better specs than the 14-inch MacBook Pro. All it offers is a bigger display and netter battery life – both of which may be the most important factor in your decision. If you need a big screened powerful Mac get the 16-inch MacBook Pro, or consider a 14-inch MacBook Pro with an external display. Take a look at the Best Mac monitors and displays we have reviewed.
What you need to know about the MacBook Pro, 16-inch
The 16-inch MacBook Pro comes with M4 Pro or M4 Max chip, there is no standard M4 option here. The entry price is a hefty $2,499/£2,499 for an M4 Pro, 14-core CPU, 20-core GPU, 24GB Unified Memory, and 512GB SSD. The equivalent 14-inch model costs $2,399/£2,399, but has twice as much storage at 1TB. The M4 Pro can support up to 48GB unified memory in the MacBook Pro.
The specs are similar to the 14-inch MacBook Pro, with the option of upgrading to an M4 Max with up to 40-core GPU, up to 128GB Unified Memory, and up to 8TB SSD.
What are you getting for the extra money if you choose a 16-inch MacBook Pro over the 14-inch model? Other than the bigger screen, you get better battery life, but not really anything else. We’ll discuss this in a lot more detail below.

MacBook Air vs MacBook Pro: Price and value for money
Since budget is often the main issue, we’ll start with price and how much you get for your money.
With no ‘budget’ MacBook Pro available, the MacBook Air is the only option for those looking for a bargain. If you are looking for the cheapest option the $999/£999 MacBook Air would appear to be the clear winner. However, we recommend spending $200/£200 more to get the 10-core CPU/10-core GPU 512GB MacBook Air, which is worth every extra penny.
The price of the MacBook Pro is higher, and on everyday tasks it performs the same as the MacBook Air, but it does offer better performance on long, CPU-intensive tasks, like image and video rendering and similar tasks. Not to mention the better screen, HDMI port, and SDXC Card slot, and more discussed below. At $200/£200 more than the 15-inch MacBook Air with M4 and the same 512GB SSD, it actually represents good value for money.
MacBook Air vs MacBook Pro: Display
One of the biggest differences between the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro is the quality of the display. There is a lot more to separate the displays than diagonal measurements.
13-inch MacBook Air: 13.6 inches diagonal, 2,560 by 1,664 pixels
14-inch MacBook Pro: 14.2 inches diagonal, 3,024 by 1,964 pixels
15-inch MacBook Air: 15.3 inches diagonal, 2,880 by 1,864 pixels
16-inch MacBook Pro: 16.2-inches diagonal, 3,456 by 2,234 pixels
You’ll notice from the above that there are significantly more pixels on the MacBook Pro screens – even when compared to a larger MacBook Air model.
The MacBook Air has what Apple calls a Liquid Retina display. The MacBook Pro has a superior Liquid Retina XDR panel. The image quality is significantly better on the MacBook Pro. However, to the average person the screen quality of the MacBook Air will be more than sufficient.
It’s not just fewer pixels though. Both Airs have a maximum brightness of 500 nits, which is half of the Pro’s 1,000 nits in normal use, or a third if you’re running HDR content at a max of 1,600 nits of which the MacBook Pro is capable. This is achieved by the Pro display incorporating mini-LEDs rather than the Air’s standard LCD screen.
Perhaps the biggest difference though is that the Pro features ProMotion, meaning that the refresh rate tops out at 120Hz, again double that of the Air’s 60Hz refresh rate. This helps keep scrolling and animations smooth and crisp. Any of these displays will be great for everyday use and long hours of work, but the Pro has the edge when it comes to features.
And there is more. With the M4 MacBook Pro, Apple introduced a nano-texture glass option that has a matte-like finish for $150. This option is not available on the MacBook Air, and if you need to cut down the glare from the display, it’s a feature to consider.
All of this is mute if you will plug your Mac into a display, of course, in which case you can buy a display that offers you the screen quality you need.

MacBook Air vs MacBook Pro: Performance Difference
There’s a reason why there is a “Pro” in the name. The MacBook Pro is better suited to pro users, by which we mean creative professionals, graphic designers, photographers, film makers, 3D animators, programmers, and so on. A MacBook Air would be more than sufficient for home users, students, and office workers, but as soon as you start to push it with something more demanding, like movie editing software, or a computer game, you might find it heats up and slows down a bit, at least in comparison to how a MacBook Pro would deal with the dame demands. That’s why we tend to recommend the MacBook Air to those who go beyond the typical user.
Despite this, if you are upgrading an old computer, the MacBook Air will feel super speedy whatever you are doing with it.
We have the data below to show just how much better MacBook Pro performance is compared to the MacBook Air.
The chart below shows the Geekbench results for the various processors.
New Apple Watch Gesture in watchOS 26 Limited to Newer Models You may have missed it, but select Apple Watch models are gaining a new Wrist Flick gesture in watchOS 26 that allows users to dismiss notifications and return to their watch face with a simple wrist movement.
The gesture works by turning your wrist over and back, using the accelerometer and gyroscope to detect the motion. With the gesture, you can dismiss incoming notifications, mute calls, silence alarms and alerts, and return to the watch face without needing to use your other hand.
Wrist Flick joins the existing Double Tap gesture as another one-handed control option for Apple Watch users. The feature can be toggled on or off in Settings ➝ Gestures ➝ Wrist Flick.
The new gesture is only available on Apple Watch Series 9, Apple Watch 10, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 – the same models that support the Double Tap gesture.
Apple doesn't say exactly why older models don't support the feature, despite having the same sensors, but it does use a new machine learning model, suggesting that only the newer chips found in recent Apple Watch models are powerful enough to handle it.
The watchOS 26 beta is currently available through the Apple Developer Program, with a public beta coming later this month, followed by a general release in the fall.

Cyberpunk 2077 Mac players get dynamic presets that aren’t possible on a PC Macworld
After five long years, Cyberpunk 2077 is finally available for the Mac today, several months after Apple teased Mac gamers during the M4 MacBook Pro reveal in October. (Actually, Apple said in the presentation that the game is coming in the “early” part of 2025, but better late than never.)
Apple also said at the time that Cyberpunk 2077 is “one of the most graphically demanding and complex games ever created,” and to help gamers get the best experience, CD Projekt Red has included what it calls “For this Mac” presets that dynamically adjust its settings for “an optimal balance between visual quality and performance.” With the presets, the more powerful the Mac is, the higher the settings will go.
The minimum requirements for Cyberpunk 2077 are an M1 series Mac with at least 16GB of RAM running macOS 15.5 Sequoia or later. The older the chip, the lower the game’s resolution will be. For example, M1 Macs will play the game at 1440 by 900 or 1600 by 900 resolution at 30 fps, while an M3 Ultra Mac runs Cyberpunk 2077 at 2294 by 1432 or 2560 by 1440 resolution at 60 fps.
CD Projekt Red notes, however, that the presets do not activate Ray Tracing, which is only available on M3 and M4 Macs. Users of those Macs will have to turn on ray tracing manually in the graphics settings.
As for storage, Mac App Store shoppers will need to allocate 159GB for the game with “all voiceovers included,” while customers of GOG, Epic Games Store, or Steam will only need 92GB. So if you have a Mac with 256GB of storage, you’ll need a speedy external drive.

2026 Foldable iPhone: All the Leaks So Far Apple is expected to launch a new foldable iPhone next year, based on multiple rumors and credible sources. The long-awaited device has been rumored for years now, but signs increasingly suggest that 2026 could indeed be the year that Apple releases its first foldable device.
Below, we've collated the key details that have been leaked about Apple's foldable iPhone so far.
Overall Design
Book-Style
According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple's foldable iPhone is similar in style to Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold, which uses a book-style folding mechanism, rather than the clamshell design of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo expects the foldable iPhone to measure between 9 and 9.5 mm when folded, and around 4.5 to 4.8 mm when unfolded. More recently, Weibo-based leaker Instant Digital has said that the foldable iPhone will have a thickness of at least 4.8mm.
Display Sizes
Dual Screens
When folded, users will interact with a 5.5-inch outer display that is similar to a typical iPhone screen, while unfolding it will reveal a larger 7.8-inch iPad-style screen. The inner display is said to be virtually crease-free, thanks to Apple's use of a metal plate that can disperse and control the stress generated by bending the display. These dimensions have been corroborated by two reputable sources. According to one rumor, the inner folding display will have a 4:3 aspect ratio and use a 2,713 x 1,920 resolution, while the outer display will use a 2,088 x 1,422 resolution.
Chassis and Hinge
Durable Materials
The foldable iPhone reportedly has a titanium chassis, with the hinge constructed from a combination of titanium and stainless steel, according to Kuo. Apple is said to be using liquid metal in the hinges to improve durability and help eliminate screen creasing. Liquid metal, manufactured using a die-casting process, has been chosen by Apple to address these two common issues with foldable devices, according to the analyst.
Cameras
Front and Rear
The foldable iPhone is expected to include a dual-lens rear camera, with a front-facing camera for both folded and unfolded states, according to Kuo. Prolific Weibo-based leaker Digital Chat Station claims that the rear dual lenses will be 48 megapixels each. Other sources have claimed that the inner display features an under-screen camera (USC), while the outer display – in the device's folded state – will have a punch-hole camera.
Authentication
Touch ID
Kuo believes the phone will forgo Face ID authentication, and instead use a Touch ID side button as a means to save precious internal space. Apple has previously integrated Touch ID into the side button of the iPad, iPad Air, and iPad mini.
Battery Life
High-Density Cells
Apple is putting a heavy focus on improving power efficiency by slimming down key components like the display driver to make room for more battery cells, according to a Korean blog that has leaked accurate details about unreleased products before. The phone will reportedly use high-density battery cells – the same ones that Kuo believes will be used in Apple's upcoming ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air.
Pricing
Premium Segment
Multiple reports suggest the foldable iPhone will be priced between $2,000 and $2,500 in the United States, which could make it the most expensive iPhone ever. More recently, analysts at investment banking firm UBS believe the phone will be between $1,800 and $2,000. Regardless of the price, the foldable is expected to tap into Apple's loyal fanbase, some of whom will view it as a "must-have device" if its quality meets expectations.
Launch Date
Late 2026
According to industry analyst Jeff Pu, the device entered the New Product Introduction (NPI) phase at Foxconn in March. Foxconn is expected to officially start producing Apple's foldable iPhone late in the third quarter of 2025 (late September), or early in the fourth quarter (October). An exact launch date is currently unknown, but both Kuo and Pu say mass production is planned for the second half of 2026. Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman has said he expects the device to be launched next year.Tag: Foldable iPhoneThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums
Listen up: 10 reasons why you need to switch from Spotify to Apple Music Macworld
Apple popularized digital music consumption in 2003 with the launch of its iTunes Store, selling both albums and individual tracks. But in the years that followed, the industry evolved from selling to streaming music, with companies like Spotify leading the way. Apple got the message, and duly copied Spotify’s business model by offering the entirety of its catalog for a fixed monthly fee–and Apple Music was born.
I recall the early days of Apple Music. While the app worked, the music discovery algorithm was noticeably inferior to Spotify’s, and its features were too limited. That’s no longer the case. Spotify continues to shine with its algorithm and Connect continuity feature, but Apple Music has arguably become the superior streaming service. If you’re primarily using Spotify, you’re missing out on these ten unique Apple Music perks.
Monthly stats
Spotify’s popular annual Wrapped event may feature a wider range of statistics and fun facts about your listening habits, but Apple Music’s Replay beats Wrapped in a couple of ways.
Apple Music provides monthly Replay stats, letting you check your top songs and artists on a regular basis throughout the year. You still get the classic year-end recap that sums up the entire year, too. If you’re curious about your all-time top songs, you can also check the newly released Replay All Time playlist, which compiles the 100 songs you’ve played most often since you first subscribed to Apple Music.
Forget that measly annual summary. We want to see a summary of the past decade.Mahmoud Itani / Foundry
AutoMix: A next-level AI-powered DJ
Spotify has long offered an AI-powered DJ, generating personalized song queues and relevant commentary. Apple’s take on an AI DJ is different. With iOS 26, Apple Music brings an optional AutoMix feature that takes the traditional crossfade to the next level.
AutoMix doesn’t merely blend the start and end of two songs based on a preset number of seconds. Instead, it uses AI to analyze the audio, then applies time-stretching and beat-matching effects to merge the two tracks seamlessly. It’s quite trippy, and Spotify seemingly hasn’t built an equivalent yet.
Karaoke mode
Apple Music has an exclusive Sing feature that turns your Apple device into a karaoke machine. It goes beyond just time-synced lyrics; Sing intelligently muffles the artist’s original vocals to spotlight yours. With Continuity Camera support on Apple TV, you can also appear on the big screen while you sing and insert special effects and backgrounds.
Yes, you just got Rickrolled. We are very sorry.Mahmoud Itani / Foundry
Dolby Atmos support
Another Spotify omission is Dolby Atmos support. With spatial audio tracks on Apple Music, your favorite songs become more immersive—particularly when wearing compatible headphones. Thanks to head tracking, the soundstage adapts to your movements, mimicking the feel of a live performance.
Lossless quality
Similarly, Apple Music offers a significant portion of its catalog in lossless quality. While most users probably can’t tell the difference, audiophiles with compatible equipment get to listen to the tracks without audio degradation. Spotify has been rumored to be working on high-fidelity support for years, but it’ll reportedly cost subscribers even more, if and when it actually launches.
Classical catalog
In 2021, Apple acquired the classical music streaming service Primephonic and promptly shut it down. The firm then released a dedicated Apple Music Classical app that offers unique features unavailable in the main Music app. These include track backstories and more granular search based on historical periods, composers, orchestras, and more.
While you will likely find the same tracks on Spotify, the company doesn’t offer a dedicated app or interface with the same perks for classical music enthusiasts.
Classical music has its own nuances and complexities that a generic music app struggles to accommodate.Mahmoud Itani / Foundry
It’s easier to avoid podcasts
Whereas Spotify and YouTube Music seem to regard music and podcasts as largely interchangeable, Apple safeguards our sanity by keeping the two (very different) audio categories separate. Music browsers on Spotify are liable to bump into distracting and annoying podcasts and audiobooks, but Apple delivers the two content types via separate apps. This also allows the company to add relevant features to the Music app without creating unnecessary bloat on Podcasts, and vice versa.
Photos integration
Apple Music subscribers get to insert their favorite songs into Memories created in the Photos app. For those unfamiliar with this popular feature, it lets you create attractive slideshows of photos (and other media) tied to a specific event, place, time period, or set of people. To make the clip more personal, you can select background audio from the millions of songs available on Apple Music.
Apple’s Memories feature can be surprisingly poignant, especially with a soundtrack that evokes a period of your life.Mahmoud Itani / Foundry
Native HomePod playback
Apple lets third-party developers build native HomePod extensions. Some streaming services such as YouTube Music have already adopted the API, which means users can play songs directly on the smart speaker, even when their iPhone is powered off or out of range. Apple Music subscribers can obviously do the same.
But Spotify? The company seems to be too busy whining about Apple’s anti-competitive behavior to implement the API. Which means Spotify subscribers get a worse experience.
Bundled with Apple One
Lastly, Apple Music is included with all Apple One bundle tiers. So, no matter which plan you’re on, you get access to Apple Music at no additional charge.
This is a big advantage for those heavily embedded in Apple’s product ecosystem, as it offers access to all of the company’s main subscription services at a discounted price. Similarly, eligible students can unlock Apple Music and TV+ for a reduced cost.
ChatGPT Plus Gets Record Mode on Mac for Meeting Transcription OpenAI has expanded access to Record Mode in ChatGPT for macOS, bringing the AI-powered transcription feature to Plus subscribers after its initial rollout to business users last month.
The new capability adds a simple "Record" button to the input window in the desktop app that allows you to capture both microphone and system audio during meetings or calls.
When recording stops, ChatGPT processes the audio on OpenAI's servers, generating structured notes complete with summaries, action items, and timestamped references. Microphone and system audio permissions must be enabled by the user first.
Sessions are limited to 120 minutes, with the original audio deleted after transcription. It's likely to be a convenient addition for some paying ChatGPT users, but the feature raises privacy considerations that the company openly acknowledges:
"Please make sure you check local laws and always get the right consents before recording others," the company warns in its documentation.
Plus users, the mic is yours.Record mode is now available to ChatGPT Plus users globally in the macOS desktop app. https://t.co/xmReUOx473— OpenAI (@OpenAI) July 16, 2025
OpenAI also says that notes and transcripts from record mode can be referenced in new chats and my be used to improve its models, though this can be disabled in the app's settings. Team, Enterprise, and Edu workspaces are all automatically excluded from model training by default.
The feature remains exclusive to macOS for now, with no immediate plans announced for Windows or mobile platforms. Team, Enterprise, and Education workspace administrators can disable the feature through ChatGPT's settings if needed.Tag: ChatGPTThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

It’s tough, low-profile, and can rotate 360° for whatever angle works best.
It’s made by HYPER—yes, the same team known for their Mac-friendly hubs and power solutions—so it’s no surprise this mount plays nice with iPhones and other smartphones up to 6.9 inches. Apple News+'s All-New 'Emoji Game' Now Available Apple's all-new "Emoji Game" for Apple News+ subscribers is now available for users running iOS 18.4 or newer.
The Emoji Game was initially unveiled at WWDC earlier this year as an iOS 26 feature, but to coincide with World Emoji Day today, Apple has released the game for all Apple News+ subscribers running iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, macOS 15.4, or newer.
The game shows words and blank spots with a selection of emoji and emoji combinations below, and the player needs to drag an emoji into the blank spot to fill in the word. If the word is "disappear," for example, you would drag a pear to the blank spot in the word. Pear could also be used to finish off the word "fruitful." The Emoji Game also uses Genmoji to offer unique emojis.
The game is limited to Apple News+ subscribers. Apple News+ is priced at $12.99 per month, but the whole family can use the service. Apple has been aiming to increase the number of games that are available, and the app also features Crossword, Quartiles, and Sudoku.
New Emoji Game puzzles will be released on a daily basis. The game is currently available in the U.S. and for English-speaking users in Canada. It can be accessed from the Following tab in the News app. Results can be tracked on Game Center leaderboards.Tag: Apple NewsThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

The new Emoji Game was initially announced as part of iOS 26 at WWDC. The game, however, is now rolling out to all iPhone users running iOS 18.4 and later as well as iPadOS 18.4 and macOS 15.4.

Report: AirPods Pro 3 Needed to Turn Around Sales Flatline The AirPods market appears to be flatlining in the United States, but the launch of AirPods Pro 3 later this year could boost sales, a new report claims.
According to a new report from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP), approximately 44% of iPhone owners in the United States now report owning Bluetooth earbuds, up from 41% in the previous year. Of those, 59% say they use AirPods. This represents a small gain from 57% the year before, effectively bringing the figure back to its 2023 level. This means AirPods are used by roughly 26% of all iPhone owners in the United States today.
While the data reflects a recovery in Apple's share of the Bluetooth earbuds market among iPhone users, it does not indicate meaningful growth beyond previous highs. The size of the market is increasing slowly, and Apple is maintaining its portion, but not expanding it.
AirPods face growing challenges from competitors including Samsung, Sony, and Bose, as well as a wide array of low-cost alternatives. Apple released the AirPods Pro 2 in September 2022, featuring the H2 chip, improved noise cancellation, enhanced Find My integration, and more.
AirPods Pro 2 were offered at a substantial discount during Amazon Prime Day earlier this month, with the price reduced from $249 to $149. Best Buy and Walmart quickly matched the pricing, despite Apple maintaining its full price on its website and in stores.
The $100 discount represented one of the steepest markdowns ever for the current-generation model. CIRP speculated that Apple and Amazon may have sought to clear out existing inventory ahead of the anticipated launch of a new model. The more likely explanation was apparently a desire to drive high-volume sales through temporary margin flexibility.
The AirPods Pro 3 are likely to be announced later this year, perhaps alongside new iPhone and Apple Watch models in September. The new model is expected to feature improved ANC, enhanced sound, design tweaks, and heart rate monitoring.
The refresh is expected to target both new customers and existing users with degrading batteries or older models. CIRP says that, as one of the most frequently reordered items on Amazon, AirPods provide Apple with an opportunity to capitalize on a faster-moving product line amid slowing iPhone upgrades.Related Roundup: AirPods ProTags: AirPods Pro 3, CIRPBuyer's Guide: AirPods Pro (Don't Buy)Related Forum: AirPodsThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Ranked: The Best Features Rumored for the iPhone 17 Lineup We have just under two months to go until the debut of Apple's iPhone 17 models, and rumors have been ramping up in recent weeks. We went through everything we know so far, pulling out the most exciting rumors and highlighting some other changes that aren't going to be so great.
Top Tier
Ultra Thin iPhone 17 Air - The iPhone 17 Air is 2025's most exciting iPhone rumor, because it's the first real redesign that we've seen to the iPhone in years. We got to try Samsung's competing super thin Galaxy S25 Edge, and it's nice holding such a lightweight smartphone.
That Orange Color - The iPhone 17 Pro is rumored to come in an orange-like shade. It's probably going to be more muted than we've seen and copper in tone, but it's still a cool color we haven't seen before.
24-Megapixel Selfie Camera - Better selfies and FaceTime video quality? Nothing to complain about there. The 24-megapixel camera is rumored for all iPhone 17 models.
More RAM - The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Air models are expected to have 12GB RAM, up from 8GB. More RAM is always a plus for games and future AI features.
iPhone 17 Pro Battery Life - According to rumors, the iPhone 17 Pro Max will have the biggest battery of any iPhone to date with a capacity of ~5,000mAh, so it should last even longer than the 33 hour maximum of the iPhone 16 Pro Max.
Pretty Awesome
iPhone 17 Colors - The standard iPhone 17 is supposed to come in green and purple, two colors that we haven't seen for a while.
Bigger iPhone 17 - The standard iPhone 17 will be 6.3 inches, so it'll match the size of the iPhone 17 Pro.
ProMotion - There have been rumors that all four iPhone 17 models will support 120Hz ProMotion refresh rates this year. If that happens, it's one less thing distinguishing the Pro models, but a plus for buyers who get the standard model.
Two-Tone Pro Design - The iPhone 17 Pro models are rumored to have a two-material design with more metal and less glass at the back. Anything that makes the iPhone harder to break is a plus.
48-Megapixel Telephoto - The iPhone 17 Pro is supposed to get an upgraded 48-megapixel Telephoto lens for improved zoomed-in shots.
A19 Chip - The iPhone 17 and 17 Air could get an A19 chip, while the 17 Pro models get an A19 Pro. It's still a 3-nanometer chip, but it'll be faster and more efficient.
Improved Cooling - The iPhone 17 models are supposed to feature better heat dissipation, which will let the A19 chips run faster with less thermal throttling.
Better Display Coating - The iPhone 17 Air and iPhone 17 Pro could have an anti-reflective display that's more scratch resistant. Anything that improves durability is a plus.
So-So
The Camera Bar - The iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone 17 Air are both rumored to have a horizontal camera bar that goes all the way across the back of the iPhone. Apple's version will surely look better in real life than in renders and dummy models, but who really wants a bigger camera bump?
Titanium to Aluminum - Apple is apparently going to drop titanium for aluminum for the 17 Pro models. Aluminum is lighter than titanium, but it feels like a step backward in quality.
iPhone 17 Air C1 Modem - The iPhone 17 and 17 Pro will get Qualcomm modems, but the iPhone 17 Air is rumored to have Apple's C1 modem. It doesn't support the fastest mmWave 5G speeds.
Relocated Apple Logo - With the larger camera bar, the two-material design, and some rumored MagSafe changes, the iPhone 17 Pro models may have an Apple logo that's lower on the device. In mockups, it's included in the design of the MagSafe ring, and it looks odd.
Apple Wi-Fi 7 Chip - Apple's using its own Wi-Fi 7 chip in all four iPhone 17 models. This may bring battery life improvements, but it's mostly an under-the-hood change that lets Apple cut out external suppliers.
Mechanical Aperture - iPhone 17 Pro models could have a mechanical aperture that will let users adjust the amount of light reaching the lens. It's useful for depth of field in DSLRs, but the utility in a smartphone remains to be seen, especially because Apple already has software-based tools for adjusting depth of field.
8K Video Recording - 8K video recording could be available on the iPhone 17 Pro. That's a cool feature, but there are a limited number of people who need to record in 8K. It's also going to take up a ton of space, and will probably require filming with an external SSD.
Lame
Price Increases - Base iPhone pricing might go up due to tariffs. Apple's facing high prices in China, and several other countries where it manufactures iPhones. Price hikes aren't a sure thing, but probable.
iPhone 17 Air Color - The iPhone 17 Air will supposedly come in black, white, light blue, and light gold, with that blue being similar to the super light M4 MacBook Air blue. Needless to say, these are boring choices.
Single-Lens iPhone 17 Air Camera - Due to space constraints, the iPhone 17 Air is only getting a single-lens camera. It won't have the Ultra Wide lens for macro images or wider-angle shots, which limits versatility.
iPhone 17 Air Battery Life - With a super thin chassis, the iPhone 17 Air needs a smaller battery. Apple is making optimizations, but it won't be on par with the 17 and 17 Pro.
iPhone 17 RAM - Right now, rumors suggest the standard iPhone 17 is only going to have 8GB RAM, while the other models get 12GB. With AI evolving so rapidly, it's less than ideal to handicap one of the 2025 smartphones.
Do you agree with our rankings? Let us know what you're most looking forward to in the comments below. For more rumors, check out our iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, and iPhone 17 Pro roundups, which we update regularly. This article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Google to Unveil New Pixel 10 Smartphones on August 20 Google plans to unveil its latest Pixel smartphones at an event that will take place on Wednesday, August 20. Google's new devices will be introduced just a few weeks before we're expecting Apple to unveil its latest iPhone models.
Google's lineup is expected to feature the company's latest foldable smartphone, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. There will also be a Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro XL, for a four-device smartphone lineup.
Rumors suggest that the Pixel 10 Pro Fold won't be as thin and light as Samsung's latest Galaxy Z Fold7, but Google might be first to improved weatherproofing for a foldable smartphone. The Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold could have an IP68 water and dust resistance rating, which would make it superior to the Z Fold7's IP48 water and dust resistance.
Few other changes are expected, but the display will increase in size a bit, and it might be a little brighter. Google is also going to add a bigger battery for some modest battery life improvements.
The new Google foldable will have a faster 3-nanometer Tensor G5 chip, as will the rest of the Pixel 10 smartphones that are in development. The G5 will be manufactured by TSMC instead of Samsung, which should bring notable improvements over last year's G4. The Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro XL aren't going to see major design or size changes, and they'll be similar to last year's Pixel lineup. Google is also expected to unveil new AI features, specifically AI photo editing options.
Google's Pixel 10 devices will compete with Apple's iPhone 17 models, though Apple won't have a foldable device until next year at the earliest.Tags: Google, Google PixelThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums
Apple racks up lots of Emmy noms, with 27 for ‘Severance’ and 23 for ‘The Studio’ Macworld
Apple has racked up more Emmy nominations than ever before. Apple’s press release states, “Apple TV+ today earned a record-breaking 81 Emmy Award nominations across 14 hit Apple Original titles,” but Apple counts its two nominated commercials, which nobody else does. Anywhere else you look, you’ll see 79 nominations.
When Apple says “record-breaking” they must mean they broke their own record, which was the 72 nominations it received last year. It is by no means a record for a single network, as HBO Max has 142 this year and Netflix has 120.
The second season of Severance earned a whopping 27 nominations, more than any program from any network this year. The standout hit–for Apple–is its comedy The Studio. It earned 23 Emmy nominations, tied with The White Lotus for third place overall and a record for any comedy in its first season.
Other standout shows include Shrinking and Slow Horses (two of our favorite Apple TV+ shows), with seven and five nominations, respectively.
Lots of nominations doesn’t mean lots of winners, though. We’ll find out which series won and for what at the Creative Arts ceremonies on September 6 and 7 and the Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony on September 14.
If you want to know what to watch, we maintain a complete list of all the Apple TV+ shows and movies here. We also maintain a list of upcoming projects so you know what to look forward to. If you don’t have Apple TV+, we have to covered, with our article telling you how to get Apple TV+ for free or discounted.

iPhone 17 Pro Might Get Scratch Resistant Anti-Reflective Display After All Apple has addressed yield issues with the scratch resistant anti-reflective display layer that it wants to use for some iPhone 17 models, and now it looks like the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max might feature the upgraded technology.
A reliable source that spoke to MacRumors said Apple suppliers have been able to achieve a high enough yield on the anti-reflective glass to support mass production. The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max will get the new display technology, but it won't be coming to the iPhone 17 or the iPhone 17 Air.
For context, we first heard rumors about the anti-reflective display layer in 2024. It's supposedly more scratch resistant than the current Ceramic Shield, so the iPhone 17 models that use it may be able to better hold up to wear and tear.
Earlier this year, Apple was having problems with scaling the display coating process, and it seemed like the feature was going to be canceled as a result. Adding the anti-reflective layer was too laborious, and it was slowing down production. The process has since been improved, and the new display is once again a possibility.
Current iPhone models have a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating and the Ceramic Shield, but Apple hasn't focused on anti-reflectivity for the iPhone display like it has for iPad and Mac displays.
Samsung's latest smartphones feature Gorilla Glass Armor, a technology that cuts down on reflections by up to 75 percent and improves contrast in bright lighting conditions. Foldable iPhone's Thickness and Price Range Detailed in New Reports Apple's long-rumored foldable iPhone will likely have a starting price between $1,800 and $2,000 in the U.S., analysts at investment banking firm UBS said this week. If so, the foldable iPhone would cost more than a MacBook Pro, which starts at $1,599.
With a starting price of at least $1,800, the foldable iPhone would be the most expensive iPhone model ever released, topping the Pro Max at $1,199 and up.
In the U.S., Samsung's new Galaxy Z Fold 7 starts at $1,999.99, so the foldable iPhone could be priced in line with competing devices.
In related news, the foldable iPhone's thickness has potentially leaked.
In a post on Chinese social media platform Weibo today, the account Instant Digital said that the foldable iPhone will have a thickness of at least 4.8mm. Earlier this year, Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that the device would be as thin as 4.5mm when unfolded, but perhaps Apple will not quite hit that mark.
Instant Digital has more than 1.4 million followers on Weibo, and the account has accurately leaked Apple information before, such as the Yellow finish for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, and the Apple Watch Ultra 2's Titanium Milanese Loop. However, like most sources, the account does not have a perfect track record.
By comparison, Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7 measures 4.2mm when unfolded. So, regardless of which source is correct here, the first foldable iPhone would be slightly thicker than Samsung's latest offering. Of course, Samsung has been releasing foldable smartphones since 2019, so Apple will be entering the market years later.
Earlier this week, Kuo said Apple is aiming to start mass production of the foldable iPhone in the second half of 2026, so the device should launch next year. He said the device will have a 7.8-inch inner screen with a "crease-free" design, a 5.5-inch outer screen, two rear cameras, one front camera, and a Touch ID power button instead of Face ID.Tags: Foldable iPhone, Instant Digital, UBSThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

The iPhone 17 Air will apparently have a titanium frame, which makes no sense Macworld
Apple generally knows what it’s doing when it comes to industrial design, but the company’s latest reported decision is causing more than a little confusion among Apple fans and pundits.
According to the GF Securities analyst Jeff Pu, the iPhone 17 Air will have a titanium frame, whereas the iPhone 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max will all be made of aluminum. This is a counterintuitive choice, to say the least, because titanium is heavier than aluminum, and the iPhone 17 Air is expected to be marketed as an ultra-lightweight smartphone. And last November, multiple sources insisted that the entire iPhone 17 range would be made of aluminum.
As well as being heavier than aluminum, titanium is considerably stronger, and it’s possible the slender iPhone 17 Air needs this sturdier frame so as to avoid another Bendgate scandal. The problem with that rationale is that Apple seems to have already solved the Bendgate issue without resorting to titanium. In 2014, the 6.9mm aluminium iPhone 6 bent (occasionally), but the 5.1mm aluminum iPad Pro, released in 2024, did not bend (outside of click-chasing YouTube stunts). Apple said it strengthened the design using a metal “cowling” on the logic board down the center of the device, and it stands to reason that it would work on the iPhone 17 Air, too.
Pu made the prediction this week in an investor note seen by MacRumors. He is a prolific pundit–we reported on his latest Apple Product Timeline last month–but one with a mixed record: at the time of writing, AppleTrack rates him at 50 percent accuracy, so his predictions should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Razer Launches Thunderbolt 5 Dock Chroma With 10 Ports and Up to 8TB Internal SSD Expansion Razer has just released its Thunderbolt 5 Dock Chroma, a premium docking station designed for creative professionals and gamers seeking expanded connectivity options. The $399.99 device supports up to three 4K displays at 144Hz or a single 8K display at 60Hz.
The dock features four Thunderbolt 5 ports, three DisplayPort 2.1 connections, two USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 ports, one USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 port, Gigabit Ethernet, and a 3.5mm audio combo jack. An SD card slot supports UHS-II speeds, while an M.2 PCIe Gen 4 slot allows up to 8TB of SSD storage expansion inside the dock itself.
Thunderbolt 5's 120Gb/s bandwidth enables rapid data transfers, and the dock can also deliver up to 140W power delivery for laptop charging. There's also an included 0.8-meter TB5 cable for connection via USB-C.
The device's anodized aluminum housing measures 206.5mm x 85mm x 30.84mm and weighs 524 grams, and if you like a bit of color on your workstation, Razer's signature RGB lighting adds some visual appeal.
The reality is that Thunderbolt 5 adoption currently remains limited in the Windows ecosystem, but Apple's latest Macs have embraced the standard, including MacBook Pro models with M4 Pro and M4 Max chips, along with the M4 Pro-powered Mac mini. Razer's dock also offers backward compatibility with Thunderbolt 4/USB 4, and Mac owners can use Razer's Synapse macOS utility to control the Chroma.
Available directly from Razer's website, the $399.99 Thunderbolt 5 Dock Chroma can be had in optional Black and Mercury White colors.Tags: Razer, Thunderbolt 5This article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums
Google Chrome ends support for macOS Big Sur Macworld
Google has announced that version 138 of its Chrome browser for Mac is the last version that can run on macOS 11 Big Sur. According to a support document, Big Sur is “outside of its support window with Apple,” and that “running on a supported operating system is essential to maintaining security.”
Chrome is currently at version 138. According to Google’s Chrome roadmap, version 139 is currently in beta and is expected to be released by the end of this month. Chrome 139 requires macOS 12 Monterey or later. Users of Chrome on Big Sur will start to see a “warning infobar” to inform them of the end of support. It’s unclear whether the infobar will be persistent or a one-time warning.
Apple discontinued Safari support for Big Sur with version 16.6, released in July 2023. Safari for Mac is currently at version 18.5, but its version will jump to 26 with macOS Tahoe to match Apple’s new OS naming system. Safari 26 requires macOS Sonoma or later.
Notably, Mac OS Big Sur was the last version of macOS to support Macs with Nvidia graphics cards, specifically the 15-inch MacBook Pro models with dual graphics from late 2013 and mid-2014, so some users may be keeping them around. Users looking for a browser that has active support for Big Sur can turn to a few other options, including Brave, DuckDuckGo, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, and Vivaldi. However, since Apple no longer supports Big Sur, it’s just a matter of time before those browsers drop it, as well.
Apple released macOS Big Sur in 2020 as the first OS following the two-decade-long Mac OS X era. The company often ends support for its operating systems five years after their release. Macs running unsupported OSes still work, but Apple no longer provides OS updates. In some extreme instances, Apple will provide security patches for certain exploits.

M4? Nah. M3? Pfft. This brand-new M1 MacBook Air is a steal at $599 Macworld
Even when they’re on sale, a new MacBook Air is pretty expensive. But if you want an Apple laptop, you don’t need to spend a fortune when Walmart is selling the M1 MacBook Air in all three colors for $599 right now.
Back when we reviewed the M1 MacBook Air, we gave it a 4.5-star rating and our Editor’s Choice award, appreciating its fantastic performance, silent operation, and how good the battery life is. Sure, that was some years ago, but our review stands — this is still a fantastic laptop for light work. In fact, the M1 chip, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage are perfectly capable of running Apple Intelligence, as well as macOS 26 Tahoe in the fall.
Granted, it won’t compete with the M4 MacBook Air, which has a faster chip, newer design, better camera, and more RAM, but we love Apple’s classic wedge design, and the M1 chip is still a great performer, especially at this price. So go grab one for $599 while Walmart still has it on sale.
